Eternal Waters - Oil on Canvas - 36" x 54"

Micah is not only a gifted artist but a remarkable teacher for his ability to impart to others what comes naturally to him. Drawing on his own expertise, Micah encourages his students to see nuances of color, shape and texture. He patiently guides students in creating their own art by teaching the subtleties of mixing color, the use of color to suggest depth and the importance of brush stroke to render texture and feeling. Micah's artistic and teaching skills combined with his enthusiasm and high energy bring out the artist in his students.

Words like "evoke", "elicit" and "enrich" only begin to describe Micah's highly attuned and insightful process of nurturing talent and fostering commitment. Instead of instructing and lecturing, there is perceiving--jointly--and then a simple question, like "Do you think there's more of a shadow here?" Micah has an unerring and deep sense of recognition. He recognizes what a painting still lacks. But far more importantly, he recognizes the potential in his students and encourages them to discover that potential for themselves.

Micah has been a wonderfully low-key portal to self expression for our children ages 14 and 16. In a very understated way, he has helped them look at an image with more awareness and appreciation for many aspects including: light, exposure, composition, and color variation. Recognizing their individual differences and vulnerabilities, he was able to push them each along. He has introduced them to watercolor, acrylics, and most recently oils. He has taught them to stretch and prepare canvas, mix color and apply it strategically.

I have known Micah since almost a decade ago, and throughout this whole time I have felt his support and caring not only as an art teacher, but as a mentor and friend. He was first my camp counselor, and then my teacher during his first art classes. Even at a late elementary/early middle school age, I deeply respected his attention and energy. No matter how many people were in the group, Micah always made the effort to make individual contact and help me realize my progress and potential. By the end of middle school I was taking private lessons weekly, and I truly felt the confidence that Micah fed me. I see Micah as a role model and mentor, someone whose guidance and support is never lacking and who has cultivated great technical skills in me as well. His influence in both my life and my art is profound, and even as I have grown and matured, I find that he has never grown apart from me.

Working with Micah has been incredibly rewarding. He has been extremely invested in my improvements in painting and taught be skills that I will hold on to for my entire life. He helps me solve the problems of all different types of subject matter so that I can really explore my interests. He has taught me how to mix paint, and really see color. He has also been a role model and mentor for me and I value any time I spend with him.

Micah is a truly gifted man; not only is his art deeply rich and moving, his teaching is patient, gentle and inspiring.
